Web Design With a Purpose

April 15th, 2011

Have you ever considered that there is a reason behind every website you have ever visited? Maybe the text in the link you clicked was structured in a way that really caught your attention. Maybe you needed diapers and you knew Diapers.com was the best so you typed the URL into your browser. Maybe you needed local Chinese food so you searched Google for Chinese food in Gainesville, and clicked on the first link that popped up.

One aspect of web design that is extremely important to us is creating websites with the user in mind. A beautiful website could actually be detrimental to your brand if it doesn’t provide the function you intend it to. A beautiful painting hung neatly on the wall is nice to look at, but that same painting strewn in the middle of the turnstile of a busy subway exit during rush hour is an eyesore and a menace to anyone trying to get home. Make sure you are considering the context of your site and how people are using it.

If people are going to be searching for, let’s say “Chinese food in Gainesville” and not going to your site directly, make sure your site is search engine optimized so that when that person searches Google, your Chinese restaurant pops up at the top.

If you are trying to sell merchandise on your website, have big bold pictures of the items on the homepage to attract attention.

If you are trying to attract registration of new members to your site, set up the site visually so that the user first learns what you are about and then is led into clicking the “Join Now!” button.

Make sure that your website is custom-tailored to the type of user that you expect to be visiting your site, and the mindframe you expect them to be in upon arrival. This is why we consider the mockup phase to be the most important part of what we do. It is at this point where all the ideas are set out on the table, the user is identified, and we determine what we want him/her to do upon arriving at the site.

We are not mind-readers and we cannot know for certain how a person is going to act when arriving at the site. Our job, and the challenge we are passionate about, is building the site in a way that makes it more likely that users will behave in accordance with your purpose. Always keep the purpose in mind first, and the rest will follow.

Web Design and Human Attraction

April 13th, 2011

It’s All About The Details!

I am sure you have heard this expression countless times before. It applies to everything from schooling to sports. Once you get the “general” concepts down, you must master the finer details if you wish to produce something worthy of remark. When you look at a website, you are instantly hit with an automatic neurological process. This complex process can be simplified to what I like to call, “sizing something up.” Very quickly, we all look at a website and determine if it “looks and feels” right. Since we also do this with everything from books to the guy or girl walking past you in Starbucks, you and I are better off learning from this truth than fighting it.

We fight our impulse to instantly size things up with rational and insightful statements like, “You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.” While this statement holds many moral truths, we are going to ignore all of them. For the purposes of this blog post and reality, we are going to accept that we all judge “books” by their cover. Instead of debating, we are going to focus on how we can manipulate this simple truth to our advantage in the wonderful world of website design.
For fun, we are now going to look at web design through the lens of human attraction. Like with people, you have three different types of websites.

1. First up, are websites that look amazing but are unreliable when it comes to functionality. In the real world, these people end up being “one night stands.” Like with one-night-stands, you are probably not coming back.
2. Websites that function really well, but give no concern to their appearance. A good analogy for this type of person is anyone who is unattractive but has a really good job. Functionality/reliability wins out in the end, but it could take a while to get there and to become intrigued. For example, Craigslist works, but it’s not pretty. Growth is slow, and things could work but the “wow” factor isn’t there from the start.
3. Then there are the rare websites that blend together attraction with perfect functionality. In real life, these are the professional athletes, movie actors and models who are not only beautiful, but are also highly functional individuals. In this last example are the objects of envy.

In real life, you don’t really have control over your looks. You do however, have control over your functionality. So there is shope for you no matter what your shortcomings may be! In the wonderful world of website design, life is even better. You have control over both your looks and functionality. So, why are there not more websites of envy out there?

The answer can be found in our lack of working together. When programmers set out to make a website, their main concern is functionality. Thus, their websites tend to function flawlessly, but their graphics resemble neglect. Artists on the other hand, are so concerned with looks that the functionality resembles neglect. The only real solution is to find a team or a firm that has already paired up artists with programmers. Over the last two years I have built a lot of websites for 2090 group. I had a hand in building everything from an online auto-mall to entire social networks. What I found was simple. It is impossible for a single person to do jaw-dropping graphics work and then immediately transition into mind-blowing programming.  People just don’t have enough energy for this. Even if you found someone who did, they would take at least 2X as long to finish the job.

In closing, consider the fact that it takes two people to make one life. Only when the right proportions are inherited does the final product get an automatic pass into the world of beautiful people. Before the actor/model was born, two people had to team-up to make it happen. If it is true in nature, than it is going to hold true on the web. When you are looking for a web design company to bring your project to life, find out who the programmer/artist team for your website is. If they are well matched, your website is almost guaranteed to be amazing! Just thought I would try and analogize one of the most overlooked aspects to amazing website design.

Running a Successful Web Design Firm

July 27th, 2010

Intro:

People are always asking me what it takes to run a successful web design company in Gainesville Florida. Since I only understand one element of the entire process, I decided to interview the customer service and sales guys here at 2090 Group to get to the bottom of this question. The following is the Q and A sessions I had with them. If you read through it, expect to gain some insight into the web design business as well as what you should look for if you are about to hire a design firm. Think of it as a “general Plan” to operating a successful web design company in Gainesville, Florida.

Q: So how can you find clients in the Gainesville/Tampa area?

A: You need to find areas where you can exchange your valuable services for their money. You need to first find businesses and people with money to invest in adding a website solution to their business. Then you need to find out if they are in need of your service or if they have any needs that you can solve with your service. You must actually solve one of their business problems to make it a win/win for both of you.

Q: So how do you find out what they need or if they are in need of your service?

A: This part of the business is a problem for a lot of young people, who are so accustomed to the impersonal nature of business. If you want to work with other business people, you have to go find them. Most business owners have time to hear you out, as long as you stress that it will be at their convenience and of great value to them. Once you convince them that what you have to offer is valuable, deals begin to be made. If you truly believe in your products and services like we do, being persistent comes naturally. After all, you are naturally most persistent about things when you passionately believe they can help people.

Q: How do you prove to them that what you have to offer is valuable?

A: That’s simple, you must either save them money, or make them money. Web design is not a luxury service like the entertainment industry. Website design needs to look elegant, but the reason you buy it, 99% of the time, is for functional purposes. This is the best place to start from, especially in a “down economy.” Businesses are looking for inexpensive ways to sell more of their products or services. No matter what you believe, there are always enough businesses marketing their products or services for website design to be a very important part of their success formula. You just really need to focus on being a vital part of their success formula.

Q: Their success formula? What is that all about?

A: You can call it whatever you want… a roadmap, formula, goal sheet, whatever. The point is, every business wants to be successful. Many of the owners also have a good idea on how to get there. For most businesses, this means a healthy supply of customers. All you need to do is focus on how a website is going to get them more customers and make their job easier. Once they see the proof and your logic makes since to them, they are happy to pay you for real results.
